“…if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have (koinonia) fellowship with one another…” (1 John 1:7)
Being in Christ also means being in fellowship with His body. Koinonia is the Greek word God chooses to describe fellowship. It also means communication, partnership and communion. It comes from koinonos which means companion, sharer, associate, partaker and partner. Years ago as I taught a study, God put a longing in my heart to experience this deeper communion that He calls us to with the Son (Phil. 3:10, 1 Cor. 1:9), the Father (1 John 1:3), the Spirit (Phil. 2:1), and other believers (Acts 2:42).
As you may have already picked up, koinonia fellowship is something very different than just eating a meal or going somewhere together. It is living in partnership with open hearts and genuine needs.
God’s heart for you and me is that we would experience the joy and strength that come from connecting to one another in love. This requires action on our part, many times in the form of communication, allowing ourselves to be used by Him to minister His life to others and a willingness to allowing others to minister to us. I cannot put into words the difference it makes to have this koinonia fellowship with companions that love the Lord and allow God to use them as vessels of His love.
It is my heartfelt prayer for you today you would experience the fullness of koinonia fellowship with God and His children by allowing someone in your life to be your companion and choosing to be that for someone else.
