Galatians 5:1 NASB
[1] It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Acts 13:39 NASB
[39] and in Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.
If you read the last part of Galatians 4 you’ll see that the freedom Jesus is talking about in Gal. 5:1 is being set free from the law. This is what Watchman Nee said about the difference between law and grace; “Grace means that God does something for me; law means that I do something something for God. God has certain holy and righteous demands which He places upon me—that is law. Now if law means that God requires something of me for their fulfillment, then deliverance from law means that He no longer requires that from me, but Himself provides it. Law implies that God requires me to do something for Him; deliverance from law implies that He exempts me from doing it, and that in grace He does it Himself.”
In Christ, under the domain of grace, Jesus has set us free FROM EVERYTHING from which we could not be freed from by trying to do our best for God. If you’re trying to keep all the rules so that you can live a blessed life, you will discover that you will never pray enough, or pray perfectly enough. You will never fast enough, or fast perfectly enough. You’ll never read your Bible enough, or go to church enough, or witness enough. You will also find that no matter how hard you try you will never try hard enough to get free from sins bondage. Sincere self effort only leaves you in greater bondage, plus all the guilt and condemnation that an imperfect performance leaves you with. Trying to live for Christ (our performance) will always find you gasping in despair and guilt, but living from Christ (His performance) will always find you in a joyful celebration of freedom. Jesus is the blessed life, and the gospel is our inclusion in the life that Jesus lives and the favor He is worthy of.
