Song 2:15 ¶ “Catch the foxes for us,
The little foxes that are ruining the vineyards,
While our vineyards are in blossom.”
Sin is relational, not judicial. God says, “catch the foxes for US.” It’s as if The Lord says, “Sin affects US.” He pursued us through the ages, stepped out of eternity into time, and paid the price He couldn’t afford to pay, so that we would be His, in intimate relationship. The fact that He is a jealous God; an all consuming fire, is evidence of how much He loves us, and longs for us to be equally yoked with Him in love. Sin divides our hearts from being fully devoted to Him. It grieves His lovesick heart, and casts a shadow on our passion for Him. Those words in Song of Solomon remind me of Gen. 3:9 when after the Fall God comes into the garden looking for fellowship with His treasure. He knew exactly what had happened, and that they were hiding from Him, when He cried His mournful cry, “WHERE ARE YOU!!!?” He so missed them, and their transparent love for Him. The words “Catch the foxes for us,” carry the same kind of urgency from the one who is love, and who knows what is at stake in the distraction, and unfaithfulness of sin. He knows it’s about US; we and Him.
