Hebrews 4:16 refers to our coming to “the throne of grace.” This throne should actually be referred to as “the throne of Grace,” because it is a throne upon which Grace (Jesus) sits. In other words, grace isn’t the throne. Grace is the one who sits on the throne, and He reigns. When we refer to historical monarchs and their rule it is common to refer to their reign as “the throne of Elizabeth II, or the throne of Louis the XIV, etc.”
Grace is a person and of course that person is Jesus, who is on the throne by conquest and sits therefore by right.” Romans 6:14 says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the dominion of law, but under the dominion of Grace.” I’m simply saying that God gives us His grace through His Son. Jesus is the embodiment of His Father’s grace. Someone said, “No Jesus, no grace. Know Jesus, know grace.” To live under the dominion of the law is to live by our own self-sufficiency trying our best to be godly and accepted before God. This is the curse of the law that only exposes our great need for Grace to step in on our behalf and, as a free gift, bear the burden of our lostness. Jesus, as the Grace of God, in our stead and on our behalf, conquered every foe, and we now live under the domain of the sovereign King named Grace. We can now live godly lives by Grace and, by Grace, are fully accepted and acceptable before God. Grace sits on the throne, and therefore everything that goes on in our lives circumstantially is under the reign of Grace. “In whom we have also obtained an inheritance in Him, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who is continually working all things according to the Council (deliberate decree) of His will.” Ephesians 1:11.
The One who is causing all things to work together for good is Grace, who sits on His throne. Isn’t it mind-blowing and exhilarating to know that when temptation rises up within you, Grace reigns, and when circumstances are happening around you that you can’t control, Grace reigns?
