Galatians 3:5,26-27 NASB95
So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? [26] For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Galatians 4:4-7 NASB95
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, [5] so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. [6] Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” [7] Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
These verses are all about sonship, and sonship is all about intimacy and heirship. So many Christians are trying so hard to obtain intimacy with God and to earn by performance blessings from God. They live as if they were outside of Christ, trying the best they can to position themselves for nearness and favor when in reality, they have been baptized into Christ and participate in His intimacy with God and His heirship.
Galatians 3:26 says that we are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, and then verse 27 describes that sonship by saying, “all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus clothed ourselves with Christ.” The Greek word “clothed” literally means to “sink into.” At our new birth, we sunk into Christ and are now clothed with Him; therefore, God calls us sons of God because He sees us in Christ. Think about that. It’s not just that God has declared you a son or a daughter. It’s that he sees us partaking of Christ and His Spirit of sonship. We participate in the intimacy and inheritance of Christ.
Galatians 4:4 – 5 says that in the fullness of time, Jesus was born of a woman, under the law, in order to redeem us and that we might receive the adoption as sons. Again, we receive as a free gift because we are in Christ His Spirit of sonship, for in verse 6, the Holy Spirit continues by saying, “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts crying Abba Father! God has included us in the life of Jesus and sees us clothed in Christ, and it is in union with the Spirit of Jesus that we cry Abba Father. We don’t have to work to obtain intimacy with the Father. We were baptized into Christ and clothed with him and therefore share in His intimacy. Our part now is to simply enjoy the intimacy that I have with the Father and the Holy Spirit in the person of Christ.
As far as blessings are concerned Galatians 4:7 says that if we are a son then we are an heir of God through Christ. Look at what Jesus said about the work of the Holy Spirit in John 16:14 – 16; “He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”
You see because you are in Christ you are joint heirs with Him. You don’t have to earn more blessings. Everything that the Father has, Jesus has, and everything that Jesus has you already have because you are in Christ. The good news of the gospel is so extraordinary. At your new birth you were placed into the sonship of Jesus and therefore His intimacy and His heirship. You can’t get more near and more wealthy spiritually and that.
