Psalm 73:25-26 AMPC
Whom have I in heaven but You? And with You I desire nothing on earth. [26] My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the Rock and firm Strength of my heart and my Portion forever.
Thirty years ago, while experiencing a heartbreaking situation, the Lord gave me these two verses, and they have been a firm foundation for me ever since. The writer of Psalm 73 is Asaph, who was a prominent Levite singer that David commissioned along with two others to be in charge of singing in the house of the Lord. He was also a Seer in David’s court
. In verse 25, Asaph is not saying that it is wrong to desire things on the earth, like relationships, material things, etc. He was simply saying that God alone should have a place of preeminence in our hearts with no rivals. He was also saying, “with God,” every one of the deepest desires of our heart is satisfied. God is enough!
I remember how much that help me three decades ago to rediscover my true North and believe that nothing on this earth could complete me like Jesus does. Verse 26 became one of the most important promises of God to me that I find these 30 years later to be still so radically true. There will be times when my flesh and my heart may fail, but in those times God will, again and again, proved to be the rock and strength of my heart and my satisfying portion forever.
There are times in our lives when our hearts are broken, and it feels like we are falling apart, but in those seasons, you will discover that you don’t have to be strong, because God will be the strength of your heart, and you don’t have to believe the lie that everything that brought you joy has been lost, because He is your portion.
