Mark 6:45-52 NASB95
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. [46] After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray. [47] When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. [48] Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. [49] But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; [50] for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” [51] Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, [52] for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
According to the John 5 narrative of this story, the disciples had rowed 3-4 miles from the shore they had pushed off from. Jesus is on a mountain praying and the disciples had gotten into the boat and had rowed 3-4 miles from him, and in the darkness they were experiencing a terrible storm and were very frightened.
There is something really simple here that has always been an encouragement to me and for many of you I believe will be an encouragement during this season of our lives. Jesus was able to see through the darkness 3-4 miles away totally aware of what the disciples were going through. He had absolutely no concern that their little boat was about to sink, and in the context of this dark, frightening moment, Jesus did something miraculous. During this time of great uncertainties concerning the future, it is so important that even though it seems like the darkness and the storm is winning, Jesus is in total control. Whether it’s just the times we are living in or some certain situation in your life where everything seems dark, and the storm is raging, Jesus sees through the darkness and he sees into the distance, and he has miraculous things up his sleeve. Your future may look dark to you, and you may not be able to see how your little boat is going to make it, be assured that Jesus sees through the darkness and into the future, and he is going to supernaturally make sure that your little boat is not going to sink. Don’t trust the darkness, or the deception of the storm. Trust in the one who sees through the darkness, into the future, and who has total authority over the storm.
