About 40 years ago I read a book by someone who said that one of the chief characteristics of a Christian who walks in the Spirit is “adjustableness.” Isaiah 66:1c tells us that God is looking for “His resting place.” God is looking for His resting place, and the question is, does He find that resting place in my life and yours? I heard Mike Bickle say that God is looking for a place where He no longer has to strive with a resistant, stubborn will. An adjustable life is one that is no longer offering resistance to the will of God in either the big or small things that make up our daily living. Mother Teresa said that surrender is to “Take what He gives and give what He takes.” The Holy Spirit is like the wind and therefore goes in whatever direction He wants to without asking our permission. Resistance to His perfect step-by-step leadership creates a lot of friction in our own souls, but adjustableness keeps us blissfully in the center of His story, which carries a peace that passes all understanding. By the way, practically, giving thanks in and for all things (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 5:20) is what a life of adjustableness looks like.
