Luke 1:67-74 NASB
[67] And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: [68] “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, [69] And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant- [70] As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old- [71] Salvation from OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US; [72] To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant, [73] The oath which He swore to Abraham our father, [74] To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear, …
Colossians 2:13-15 NASB
[13] When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, [14] having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. [15] When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
At The Cross the war was won, and the enemy of mankind was disarmed. The nature of earthly warfare is that battles are fought daily in the hope that in the end the war will be won, but in the cosmic conflict, Jesus won the war at the Cross, and daily sends us out into a battle of enforcing a victory already won. Our battles are battles of victory after the fact that the war has already been won. Everything in the Christian life begins after Jesus said “it is finished.” When it comes to the battle of sin in our own lives we are not fighting a fight to win, we are fighting the good fight of faith, having already won in Christ. According to those verses in Luke 1, Jesus has already accomplished saving us from our enemies. It says in verse 74 that we were rescued from the hand of our enemies. That would rescue is what redemption is all about, and it says in verse 68 that Jesus “has” accomplished redemption for his people. At the Cross He disarmed the enemy and therefore rescued us from the powers of darkness; and the old self was crucified, and a totally new creation was created in Christ, so that we can go forth rejoicing in the victory of Christ over Satan, sin, and death. As we minister the victory of Christ to a lost and fallen world, we go forth in the shadow of the Cross, proclaiming a victory already won, commanding the powers of darkness to leave the field of battle, for they have already been defeated.
