Luke 1:35 NASB [35] The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
Psalm 91:1-4,9-10 NASB [1] He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” [3] For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. [4] He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. [9] For you have made the LORD, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place. [10] No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent.
How was God going to perform the miracle of a virgin becoming pregnant with the promised Messiah? The power of the Most High was going to overshadow her!!!! Her inability to do this was going to be overshadowed by the ability of The Most High. I love that title “Most High.” It means that His presence and ability tower above any human weakness, any situation, and the devil with his demonic forces.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by circumstances or by your own inadequacy in dealing with them? I love what Psalm 91 says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. For you have made the LORD, my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place.”
As people who are in Christ, you perpetually live in the shelter of The Most High, and therefore, you live under the shadow of The Almighty. Just think about that; you are always under the overshadowing presence and power of The Most High. It’s like a shadow that follows you into every situation. You don’t have to live “overwhelmed.” Instead, you can live being conscious of being “overshadowed.” It is so liberating to live overshadowed, rather than debilitated by being overwhelmed.
