One Thing 12/1/25 The Incarnation; God’s thirst for us

In order for the Word of God to be understood by men, He had to come down to our level and become human. By becoming human, the Word could reveal Himself through the ideas and language that men use to converse, think, and relate. This idea is central to the doctrine of the incarnation, where the Word, which was with God from the beginning and was God, became flesh. This Word, through whom all things were created, dwelt among us in the form of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Jesus, the word, is the language of God. By becoming human, He translated the divine into a form we can grasp, using our ideas and language. He did this because He wanted us to know the truth about Him, a truth that would set us free to love Him for who He truly is.

The incarnation was God’s way of explaining Himself in terms we could understand, driven by His deep desire for us to truly comprehend Him, understanding the truth about His actual nature, which is love. God wanted us to know that He is good. He became a man to be able to reveal His goodness in language we could grasp, so that we would stop hiding from Him. His true heart is reflected in Jesus’s words on the cross, “I thirst.” This statement illustrates God’s thirst for love. His thirsting heart to heal our fallen and broken humanity; His thirsting heart for us to love Him in response to our clearly realizing the truth about Him as love itself, and thus how much He loves us, even in our darkness, brokenness, and imperfection, and His delight to embrace us and heal us.
