Luke 1:46-49,53 NASB
And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, [47] And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. [48] “For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. [49] “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. [53] “HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS; And sent away the rich empty-handed.
Matthew 5:6 NASB
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Psalm 42:1-2 NASB
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. [2] My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced to her that she was going to give birth to the Messiah, he called her “Favored one.” The grammar there in the original text indicates that she had been walking in the favor of God for some time, and it was her normal condition, but Gabriel was offering her the opportunity to experience God’s favor in her life at a level she might have never imagined. In verse 48, and 49 Mary describes that favor by saying “the Mighty One has done great things for me;” She even said that the blessing was going to be so great that all generations would count her as blessed. I’ve often wondered, why God chose Mary, and not some other Jewish woman. Obviously, she had to be of the tribe of Judah, but beyond that, why was she God’s choice for such great favor. I want to mention one simple disposition that was in Mary that I believe played a pivotal role in her being postured before God for such great favor.. In verse 53 Mary makes this declaration, “He has filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty-handed.” The rich are satisfied with what they have, but the hungry long for more. I believe that one of the reasons God trusted Mary with such great favor was because he found her with a hungry heart. That verse in Matthew 5:6 is a fascinating one, and it is paradoxical. The grammar in that particular verse tells us that those who stay continually hungry and thirsty, will be satisfied. If you’re satisfied, doesn’t that mean that you should no longer be hungry and thirsty? One of the great truths about our relationship with Jesus, is that the more he satisfies your hunger and thirst, the more hungry and thirsty you become. The satisfied in Christ live continually hungry and thirsty. As a teenage girl, God found in Mary a heart that hungered after him, and God is so attracted to that, because God wants to be wanted. No matter who you are, or your age, if you want to experience an increase of the manifest favor of God in your life, then ask the Holy Spirit to give you a hungry heart for more.
