“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 5:3

God is drawn in great compassion to the poor because they are so vulnerable and desperate. They are drawn to God because they have no backup plan other than Him. James 2:5, “Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?” Desperation, vulnerability, and utter dependence, are the riches of the poor, and their reward is the wealth of The Kingdom.

God longs for us to embrace the spirit, or attitude, of the poor, so that in our hunger and desperation for Him, He can be the abundant source of our satisfaction. He wants to be wanted by those who were created to love Him and Lean on Him as our chief delight. Our hunger and thirst is God’s great gift to us.

I’ve found that He often creates opportunities for me to embrace my vulnerability, and desperation. He at times dances me into the wilderness, to awaken the “spirit of the poor” in me. He becomes so attractive, and my sole delight in those places. He exposes all my backup plans that I thought I had hidden from Him, and over time, and as He dances me out of those desperate places, it’s always said about me, “Who is this coming up out of the wilderness LEANING on his Beloved.”
