One Thing 8/1/17

S.S.2:16 “My beloved is mine, and I am his;

S.S. 6:3 “I am my beloved’s and my Beloved is mine.

S.S. 7:10 “I am my beloved’s, And his desire is for me.

These three verses reveal a progression in maturity as we grow in our experience of union with Christ. Early in the  Shulamites journey into the fullness of Jesus, she is implored to “catch the little foxes” that are ruining the vineyard. Jesus is telling us that fullness and victory over the reign of sin go hand in hand, and that we must be intolerant towards sin in our lives, even down to the little foxes; not just the lions, tigers, and bears, oh my. Her response is so true, and so foundational, and yet reveals some growth yet needed. In light of having to confront sin, even down to attitudes in her life, she decrees the wonders of grace. What’s important to her is that Jesus is hers and nothing, no sin of any kind, can change that. This first step of affirming our unconditional security in Him is imperitive. Of course she is also His; that is she belongs to Him, but what most important to her at this stage is that He belongs to her unconditionally.

The second statement in chapter 6 reveals a transformation in the growth of one pursuing Christlikeness. Notice the order is reversed. She is now realizing that He is Lord, and if He is to be experienced in all of His fullness as her life, then His will, and His possession of her must come first. Of course, He is gloriously still hers, but what has become first to her is that she is His.

Now look at the last advancement in the Spirit described in 7:10. “I am my beloved’s and His desire is for me.” I’m not sure there is a more glorious verse in all of scripture. There is so much here, but I want us to look at just a couple of things this Zenith verse says to us. First, she is saying that she lives for Him alone, and that He alone has full rights over her life. It makes me think of 2Cor. 5:15 that says we no longer live for ourselves but for Him. She realizes that she is His great desire and delight. Her love given back to Him in affection, worship, and obedience is His greatest pleasure. She is also saying He longs, and is now able to pour out His Spirit, and favor on her without measure.

“Jesus, I my cross have taken; all to leave and follow the. Even destitute, despised, forsaken, you from hence my all shall be.”
