One Thing 6/28/12

“Curse God and die.” (Job 2:9) This is what Job’s wife told Job after he lost everything. She was saying that ultimately God is behind all of this, and absolutely nothing meaningful can come out of it. She is saying God’s in control and His goodness can’t be trusted, so just curse Him and die. To curse God isn’t necessarily to say swear words to God, but it is to make evil pronouncements about Him. It is to declare that He isn’t good, just, fair, or loving. We curse God all the time when we murmur and complain about life. Philippians 2:14-15 says, “Do all things without grumbling and disputing; that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” When we murmur and complain, grumble and dispute, we are making evil pronouncements about God’s love, goodness, and wisdom. We are saying He doesn’t rule, and if He does, His rule isn’t good. Again we are saying that that He doesn’t work all things after the council of His will, but if He does then His wisdom and insight isn’t good, and His purposes aren’t redemptive. May we not be like Job’s wife. Instead, let us bless the Lord at all times. Let us give thanks in ALL things, because we know He rules, and He is good. You may not understand it all, but it’s not your comprehension God wants, it’s your confidence that ravishes His heart.
