One Thing 5/1517

Luke 2:40 , The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

Luke 2:52 , And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

As an infant the grace of God in fullness was already upon Jesus as a human, but at 12 years it says that Jesus grew in the grace of God. Even though Jesus already had the grace of God on him he grew in his experience of the grace of God. It wasn’t that he got more grace over time, but he broke through again and again into larger experiences of the grace already provided for him. Colossians 2:10 says that we are born into the kingdom of God complete in Christ. Therefore, like Jesus, we are born spiritually with the fullness of grace on us, but if Jesus had to grow in grace, how much more do we. That word “grew,” or in some versions it’s the word “increased,” comes from two words, “cut,” and “forward.” Think of using a machete to cut a path through thick brush in front of you so that you can move forward. Even though all grace is ours in Christ at the beginning of our new birth, we are called to be very intentional to cut through, that is to break through, into larger experiences of that grace again and again in our Christian walk. I have found that many times that God uses testing, even severe testing, to be the impetus  that pushes us to cut forward into increasing experiential grace. Simply put, the wilderness often carries us into breakthrough. Waste places are never wasted in the hands of the Lord. The valleys have a way of funneling us into green pastures.
